Puʻuloa Energy

A Clean Energy Project

The Puʻuloa Energy project is proposed by Ameresco, Inc., to construct, own and operate this facility for a term of 30 years. This firm-energy project will provide approximately 99 MW of firm and flexible renewable generation and utilize 11 dual-fuel reciprocating generators.

The project will be designed to interconnect to the Oʻahu grid and provide resiliency for Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam should there be an island grid failure.

The Project will provide significant grid benefits, notably supporting grid stability to allow for more rooftop solar and other intermittent resources while also providing Black Start capacity to the island grid if needed to recover from a major grid outage.

The Project’s renewable energy will supply power to approximately 23,000 homes while utilizing carbon-neutral renewable fuel, helping Hawaiʻi to reach its renewable energy goals while benefitting the environment.

Project Details

  • Existing warehouses on heavy industrial site would be deconstructed by local recycling non-profit
  • New engine building housing 11 engines, control room, and electrical gear to protect equipment and minimize noise
  • On-site biofuel storage for 14 days of plant usage
  • Biofuel offloading facility
  • High-voltage substation for interconnection to Hawaiian Electric’s infrastructure

Location

Puʻuloa Energy will utilize an approximately 10-acres portion of TMK (1) 9-9-001-008 and is located on Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam, Oʻahu, Hawaiʻi.
